Breville Fountain Juicer – are centrifugal juicers okay?
There is a bit of controversy surrounding whether centrifugal or masticating juicers are better. The Breville Fountain Juicer, for instance is a centrifugal juicer, while brands like Champion only produce masticating juicers. Here’s the difference:
Centrifugal Juicers (like the Breville Fountain juicer):
These operate on the principal of spinning very quickly at a high rpm to grind fruits and vegetables very quickly, sucking them into a blade, chopping them up extremely fine and filtering out the juice. The best thing about centrifugal juicers is that you can juice a large amount of produce very quickly. Some people argue that some nutrients are lost with machines like the Breville Fountain juicer because of the heat they produce. Some say the heat generated can destroy the enzymes coming from the raw fruits and vegetables. My personal opinion is that if there is any loss of nutrients, it’s negligible at best. For me, the speed, convenience, quick prep time and easy cleanup are more than worth a nutrient or two that may or may not be lost. Frankly, I drink enough juice that a slight bit of enzyme destruction really shouldn’t matter. Fresh juice from the Breville Fountain juicer still makes me feel really good.

While I can’t claim to be an expert on this theory, if there are any enzymes destroyed in the final juice, the difference between the two methods seems to be negligible.
Any food put through a process will be altered. That’s why when you cook an egg, it looks different than when it came out of the shell. While it’s been proven that many nutrients are destroyed in cooked vs. raw vegetables, the point is this: Be as healthy as you can. Make the choices that fit into your lifestyle.
It seems to me that both types of juicers are excellent choices, and your selection comes down to personal preference.
For me, the convenience and speed of my Breville Fountain juicer, a centrifugal juicer, means I’ll use it more often. This is the important part. Buy what you will use.
